Polo Renaissance

12 years have passed since polo has been re-introduced as a sport to modern Mongolia. The Mongols with their once mighty cavalry have a great history connected with this equestrian game. They used to play it in the middle ages, then polo was forgotten.

Besides the recent renaissance of polo in Mongolia, the sport is now spreading rapidly in Asia - to the south of Mongolia now in China, led by the Nine Dragons Hill Polo Club in Shanghai. Soon west to Kazakhstan and to the east to Korea and Japan. In all these areas polo was once practiced as a martial art on horseback.

Two years ago the FIP Polo Discovery Destination Cup & an Ambassador's Cup were played in Mongolia. During the last winter a team of Mongol polo players had toured Australia for 4 months & on their way back home played at the Singapore Polo Club on May 15th. Mongolia with thousands of riders and millions of horses is here to play polo again in the 21st century.

In 2010 at the end of August the 1st International Polo Naadam will be held at GKPC with international guests from several Asian countries.

The present tasks and policy of the Mongolian Polo Federation is an intensive training campaign for the next years, especially for the Young - boys and girls. For this, international help, in form of trainers and advisers, is most welcome.

Since 2008 Children Polo Summer Training Camps have been set up in different provinces of the vast country. In a nation were most children in the countryside are excellent riders it is natural to install those training camps. At the same time a pilot project at the Genghis Khan Polo and Riding Club continues, offering training facilities to local children and summer guests & children from the international community. Mongol, English, Spanish, French, Chinese, Russian and German is spoken at the camp.
